Ateliermob among the finalists of the Novo Portugal Novo Competition
The public ideas competition for Bairro Portugal Novo, in the Areeiro parish of Lisbon, aims to find solutions for the development of a programme, procedure and process for the rehabilitation and rehousing of the 255 resident families.
Alongside the proposals by the teams led by our colleagues Francisco Puga and Telmo Cruz, ateliermob’s proposal was selected for the “residents’ public scrutiny” phase of the competition launched by Lisbon City Council in 2025. As this is not a typical architecture competition, since the aim is to develop proposals for the process rather than for the projects themselves, the competition brief defined it as follows: “to obtain ideas to define an architectural and social approach, as well as to establish a phasing strategy, scheduling the intervention over time and space.”
As its public presentation is due to take place shortly, we should not yet disclose the content of the proposal. However, it is important to mention from the outset that it was developed through several co-authorships that we have been sharing with our dear colleague Filipa Serpa (Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon). The ateliermob team was also joined by Chilean architect and PhD researcher Karen Saavedra (with a PhD thesis presented at FAUL on public housing policies) and by architecture graduate Mariana Guimarães Marques (whose thesis at FAUL focused on flexible housing).
This is a very exciting project that will take us back to Portugal Novo, where we worked more than ten years ago, and which could mark the beginning of a significant process of improving the quality of life and public space. It could also become a reference for other regeneration processes involving temporary rehousing, without loss of the right to remain in place or the destruction of existing community dynamics.
