URGENT MEASURES FOR AN OPEN POST-QUARANTINE CITY

Over the next few weeks, the cities of Portugal will gradually resume the circulation of people and goods. If nothing is done from the urban point of view, only the policing of urban territories will be able to stop the exponential increase in the use of the car, the most violent expressions of fear towards the other and the generalized feeling that the public space is a territory of insecurity.

But there is another way. Placemaking strategies, tactical urbanism, reinforcement of public transport and drastic reduction of car traffic, can no longer be treated as events and ephemeris, to be adopted as instruments of urban design and production of public space.
